Greece to consider new gaming regime through public consultation

Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP), the Greek gambling regulator, organises another public consultation regarding the legal framework of online gambling in the country. Within ten days, everybody engaged in gambling activities are invited to comment on the draft updates that were agreed at the previous consultation held in September-October last year. The ongoing discussion will be available to join till 25th January 2019.

The EEEP measures cover betting and table games while online casino games are not yet under consideration. Hellenic Gaming Commission devotes special attention to responsible gambling to protect players at risk. Operators will have to publish responsible gambling information on all the webpages of their online resources as well as to offer their users to limit their wagering amounts. Also, the EEEP will require operators to follow special guidelines to exclude players from gambling if there will be a reason to do so.

Gambling advertising will also be affected: no offensive visual or sound promotion materials should cover the main playing screen. Using pictures of sports celebrities will also be moderated. Any violation of those could lead to delicensing.

In addition, the new set of rules is aimed to control bonus features offered, according to which all licensees should clearly display the conditions on amounts and bonus features that gamblers can get.

As for the security part, the Gaming Commission requires operators to execute a central information system, intermediate control system, gateway control technology and geolocation software.

Online gaming and sports betting permits will cost €5 million and will be valid for 5 years. In addition to the main fee, the applicants will have to pay a guarantee of €500 thousand. Note that only those companies that are holders of a license of other EU country and have not been blacklisted within the last 12 months will be considered for a new license.
