Italy introduced a new system for players - self-exclusion
Recently, it was reported that the Italian gambling regulator Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS) had launched a new program for addicted players who wish to self-exclude from gambling and sports betting. The system provides for the creation of a Unique Self Exclusion Registry – USER.
If the player voluntarily gives up any gambling and related services, it is enough for him to put the personal data into the register. Addicted gamblers have the opportunity to independently choose the self-exclusion period. For example, you can restrict yourself from gambling for a couple of months, half a year, a year, or forever.
While developing a new programme, AAMS cooperated with the Polytechnic University of Milan and Italian state financial auditor SOGEI. The launch of this national program allows residents to take responsible actions, guided by their own safety and common sense.
It is a very important tool for those people who are especially subject to gambling addiction. It contributes to the formation of a new worldview and changes the attitude to problem gambling, which is extremely important concerning the rapid development of online gambling.
Let us remind that in early January 2018 the Italian regulator launched the online gambling market development campaign and issued a public tender for obtaining up to 120 new gambling licenses. Thus, USER system is a part of the gambling market development concept in Italy.
The self-exclusion register comprises all gambling establishments of the country. Having excluded from any licensed operator, the player automatically loses access to all gambling establishments. The new scheme greatly simplifies the procedure: the player only needs to fill out the form and submit the request. After that, gambling operators not only block the account on all gambling portals but also eliminate the possibility of re-registration.
The number of registered users on gambling websites in 2017 in Italy amounted to 3.7 million people, and the total number of accounts reached 8.2 million. For example, in 2016, about 22% of Italians gambled on a regular basis, while already in 2017 the number increased to 25%. Moreover, according to AAMS report for February 2018, the revenue from sports betting amounted to €878, 8 million, which is 6.7% higher than over the same period in 2017.
Along with the growth of the gambling market, the problem gambling is growing as well, constituting a big social threat for the population. Therefore, the Italian authorities, aware of the seriousness of the situation, try to prevent its development by using the pro-active measures.
