Sweden to start accepting applications for online gambling licenses

In late February, it became known that the Swedish gaming regulatory body, Lotteriinspektionen, will open a licensing window for online casino operators from 1 July 2018.

Sweden intends to introduce new laws regarding gambling business on the Internet from 1 January 2019, but the development of new regulations is still in process.

In 2017, the regulatory body actively worked on general and technical details in cooperation with representatives of gambling community. As a result, the draft legislative amendments were published in the public domain at the end of the year.

One of the most discussed ongoing aspects is the tax rate that applies to the licensed online operators. As planned, this will be an 18 percent tax on income gained in Sweden. But yet, Lotteriinspektionen believe that large gambling operators will have a stake in the Swedish market.

Camille Rosenberg, Director General of Lotteriinspektionen, said that there would be no restrictions on the number of licenses issued. However, all applicants must meet specific criteria. Each operator will be thoroughly and carefully reviewed according to the business responsibility and possibility to provide a high level of security.

Thus, from 1 July 2018, Lotteriinspektionen begins considering applications for gambling licenses from domestic and foreign operators willing to conduct online activities in the territory of Sweden. The date of effect of the permit also depends on the quality of application submitted.

According to Camille Rosenberg, the reform of Sweden's gambling market will be conducted within three years, and the regulator will do everything possible to succeed.
