President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the country’s government to legalize gambling in 2019. Zelensky demanded that Parliament adopt new gambling laws before December 1.
According to the president, the legalization of the gambling sphere will help transform the casino industry from an underground business to a legitimate one. Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, is in charge of passing the laws by the deadline.
The president asked the government to prepare draft bills by October 1, 2019. Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk and Finance Minister Oksana Markarova are in charge of preparing the documents.
The president’s decision is understandable. Recently, Zelensky revealed his plans for conducting a number of economic reforms, including legalizing casinos in five-star hotels. According to several estimations, if the industry becomes legal, the Ukrainian gambling market will bring $1.5 billion in tax revenues.
